How do I know if my vehicle is involved in a recall?

When a specific make and model, or group of models, is involved in a recall, the first thing the manufacturer does is make an attempt to contact all current owners of that model. They do this by mail. It’s pretty amazing how thorough a car company can be in contacting current owners. I was surprised to receive a recall notice for a Toyota Tundra I owned since I was the fourth or fifth person to own the truck, and it had a salvage/rebuilt title! The manufacturers are able to get lots of owner info from states’ motor vehicles departments, but not all of them. Some states aren’t as cooperative as others.  As hard as they try, they are never able to reach each and every owner of the model vehicle that needs repair. So they also contact the dealerships to inform them of the recall. If you have your vehicle serviced at the dealer, they’ll be more than happy to let you know your car or truck is involved in a recall. They get to do the repair and they get paid for the work by the manufacturer. A simple Google search using your car’s make and model with the word “recall” will yield tons of information, too.
